This morning I was reflecting on the Facebook photo's of my friend's Christmas meals. And one thing is common to most of them - there's a long table filled with people.
I love that about Christmas. How it brings friends and family together.
My mum has a Christmas philosophy about 'waifs and strays' - no one is ever to spend Christmas alone, or just with their spouse. So the minute she finds out it's just you and your loved-one over a candle, she makes sure you're invited. Even if you had a random cousin joining you - they join us too! I remember one Christmas in Johannesburg sitting at the head of a 25 person table, with a few people there I'd never met before that evening. It amazed me that you can put a whole bunch of people who hardly knew each other at one long table and for that one night, they all just get on and have fun.
This year our table was 19 - just family this time. And what I love about it is that feeling of belonging to this crazy bunch. No Whatsapp group of facebook friendship ever can replace the humanness of The Long Table of Christmas. Doing what people through the ages have done - gather the family over a meal.
We all know that families are hard. It always amazes me that two humans ever remain married over any period of time given how different our families can be. Every one of us does something that drives the other members of our family dilly. And put 19 of those crazy quirks together, and it has the potential to go seriously sideways. Yet for a few hours, we bite our tongues and focus on the things that unite us. We create memories for ourselves and for our children. And each of those memories is like another strand that is added to the rope of relationships.
That's what I love most about Christmas. The Long Table. And I hope that for every one of us, that Long Table can extend through the year ahead. That we can look around and see who's alone, and invite them to our table. That it's not always those we know, that sometimes we'll sit at the head and look down and be amazed at how much richness putting together people who don't know each other can bring to all.
Thank you for all your support over this year. May you and your loved ones continue to enjoy the Long Table of Christmas.
